I was born in England and as a young child immigrated to the U.S. where I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in sociology and Spanish literature, followed by a Master’s degree in sociology. Following that, I completed another Master’s degree in math education. I am married to my high school sweetheart. We have been together 27 years and we have two children, Oscar and Madeline. I love to read, I love puzzles and brain teasers, and I love to teach. Mathematics is the language of the universe we find ourselves in. It is the tool with which we navigate, understand, and manipulate the natural world. My goal in teaching it is to help students recognize some of its beauty and power, and to help them understand that the struggle to learn it will make them smarter.

I grew up in the Bronx, off the D/4 train. I have a BA from Manhattan College and MAs from Fordham University and St John’s University.

This is my seventeenth year teaching, my first 14 years were spent teaching High School English in the Bronx, and the last three as a MS/HS librarian at PPAS. I enjoy teaching at the PPAS library because it forces me to stay current with a wide variety of genres ranging from: graphic novels, to biographies, to manga. Also, teaching in the library allows me to empower students with the tools of the 21st century research by teaching them how to locate, evaluate, and cite strong resources.

DIRECTOR OF COLLEGE COUNSELING

I was first in my family born in the US and originally raised outside of Boston. As a teen, I longed to be near mountains and a thriving music scene, so Seattle was the perfect place to move in the 90s, where I graduated from the University of Washington. Work shuttled me to New York City numerous times per year and I realized after 6 years of the Pacific Northwest, my snowboard skills were not improving and I longed to be near a more bustling city. I earned my masters in education at NYU, and have relished working with teenagers for over ten years, celebrating our students' achievements in the arts, and guiding our students with the college application process. I urge students to keep in touch with me after high school and networking with alumni has also been especially meaningful.
